Dr. Groh was AMAZING! We cannot say enough good things about him! This Doctor actually took the time to TALK to David and I about Baron and his medical history. He was well versed on Baron's medical records, that I had forwarded to him, but he wanted to know what we saw and how our dog was feeling. Awesome, considering the last specialist may have had a lot of letters behind his name, but had NO people skills. David and I started at the beginning, when all of this started (in September) and went to the present. After talking to us about Baron for over 30 minutes he checked our boy out.
The Doctor did a skin test to see if the staph infection was go... and it was... YESSSSS! Then, he confirmed what we had suspected for months. Baron, most likely, a has severe allergies to multiple ingredients that can be found in ALL popular dog foods (even the $100 prescription food the other specialist had us try). The Doctor asked us if we would be willing to cook for the dog since there was not "test"for food allergies. I just knew he was going to say that! Of course we would, is what we told him. He said that Baron can have NOTHING in any of these groups: chicken, beef, fish, wheat, dairy, soy, corn, peanuts, egg, pork and lamb. What was left? You guessed it... fruits and vegetables.
Baron has a food recipe that was sent home with us. He eats a doggie stew, if you will, twice a day with 4 cups per serving. Yes, 4 cups per meal. YIKES! His stew mainly consists of sweet potatoes (Fresh, not canned. Canned ones are preserved with corn syrup.), green beans, cauliflower, carrots, peas and beans (he loves beans) and 1.5 cups of Canola oil (this gives him the only fat in his diet and keeps his coat shiney). For treats he can have fresh fruits or dried fruits.
After about a week and a half Baron is really enjoying his new diet. Even though he is not a fan of cauliflower! He is, however, making the other dogs VERY jealous. Baron, is a Big Sweetie though and shares with them sometimes. The itching has not really slowed at all, but the Doctor said it can take 4 to 6 weeks for the allergens to work their way out of his body. He still has some sores and is loosing a lot of weight (which we expected), but we are keeping our fingers crossed! We talk to this Doctor once a week until the end of this month and then reassess Baron's situation.
Baron : 8 months
Thanks for you emails about our Big Sweetie and please continue to keep him in your prayers! He appreciates it!
